Happy Holidays
Hope all you people out there have had a good (and minimal stress) holiday. I know that I can’t complain much.
I will be back in full force after I safely arrive back home from the wonderful state of Oklahoma on the 3rd. I may or may not be able to find time while I am traveling to find a good beer, but if I do rest assured I will let all of you know.
Until then. Happy holidays and...
Pre-Opening of The Holy GrAle
Some of the few perks of the local beer world is going to parties focused all around good beer. There is nothing better then good beer, good friends, and good conversation.
After the 2nd Annual Highlands Beer Festival was over and My Old Kentucky Homebrew Booth was safely packed away, I wandered over to the Louisville Beer Store’s newest endeavor, The Holy GrAle. Lori and Tyler have made...
2nd Annual Highlands Beer Festival
Every week or so, when this poor kid finds money and time to go grocery shopping, I make my way though Mid City Mall and into ValuMarket. The supposed mall isn’t what you think it is. There is one long hallway with a few interchanging offices, Baxter Avenue Theater in the rear, and a the Nearly New Thrift Store in the basement. So when I caught wind that there was going to be a beer...

callmecurious asked: What beer would you recommend to a beer virgin?
Samuel Smith - India Ale
It’s that time of the year again. School mid terms are looming overhead for all the students in the world, while the market is already flooding the shelves with gift sets and nic nacks. Today was only one of my mid terms. A very long multiple choice test on the basics of sociology. I managed to make it though the test with enough time to get home by 2pm.
I arrived home only to realize...
LAGERS - Newest Member
After attending a few meetings and events hosted by the Louisville Area Grain Extract Research Society, aka The LAGERS, I made myself an official member. $10 well spent if you ask me.
Last Monday’s meeting was all about a very interesting brewing technique called ‘Brew in a Bag’. This method was developed and found predominantly in Australia, where the sparging process is...
Cafe Amsterdam - Anchorage AK
I don’t normally focus on locations, restaurants, or bars. Do not misunderstand me, I do enjoy a few choice bars, but I am not your average bar hopper or into the club scene. I enjoy more of the slower paced, relaxed scenes. I’m not into shots, bombs, or really any hard liquor besides some really good bourbon. I am one of those people, who truly enjoy beer. So when my friend Rob...
It Came From The Cellar Homebrew Competition
Louisville Craft Beer Week has been upon us and damn am I tired. I’d like to have been able to particpate more in all of the wonderful festivities, but sadly with school and everything else, I’ve been limited.
The one event that I was able to make and help out with, was the It Came From the Cellar competition. Every home brewer out there has a beer or two that they have been...

About that...
I need to apologize for the lack of posts. I have left the tap dry and been neglecting my duties as a beer snob. School has started so my time is very scarce, but that is no excuse.
However I will be bringing this back up to speed here very soon.
In the mean time, keep drinking good beer.
Cheers!
2010 Brew at the Zoo
The Louisville Zoo host a local brew fest every year. Sounds like a ton of fun, right? Zoo animals, all you can drink beer, wine, good food, and live music, are typically all the ingredients for a good time.
Indeed it was. Minus the zoo animals that is. The actually location of the festivities were in a back lot fried, away from the zoo exhibits. Although my inner child...

Moose Drool Brown Ale - Big Sky Brewing Company
My dear mother is quite an interesting character. She runs her own designated driver service in the city of Anchorage. She hikes, she teaches, and still manages to be a caring mother to myself and my younger brothers. As we have all grown and the family dichotomy has changed, my mother has taken up a few uncharacteristic but benign hobbies.
It was time for, my friend Rob, his girlfriend...

Hell or High Watermelon - 21st Amendment Brewery
I can’t help it. Sometimes I am highly distracted by pretty packaging. I blame it on the time spent in San Fransisco interning with a graphic design firm. Speaking of San Fransisco, the city produces a lot of fashionable products but trendy doesn’t always equal good. Still I found my hand reaching towards the shelf and purchasing a 6 pack of canned watermelon beer.
As it poured...
Glacier Brewhouse
After waking early and attempting to catch a few fish, and only succeeding in catching a single rock, it was time to feel better with a good beer. My partner and I headed home to wash the mud off and make our way down to the Glacier Brewhouse. Located in the heart of downtown, on 5th Ave, the brewhouse is pretty swanky but well worth the effort.
We walk in only to see that building is packed...
Midnight Sun Brewery
It was a sunny day, so it seemed. Anchorage, Alaska is part marsh, part rain forest, and part crazy landscape and wild animals, will never let you know what the weather will truly be. Being that it was sunny, my partner and I still managed to sleep in and skip our fishing plans entirely. I blame it on the time difference. None the less we still had our hearts set on touring the Midnight Sun...
The Alaskan Brewing Company - White Ale
Today was not the best of days. Since I’ve landed the weather has been overcast and rainy. Not the sort of rain we are used to back home in Louisville. There’s been no crazy storms that knock over trees or power outages. No sir, rain in Anchorage means a miserable cold drizzle. Plans to visit Matanuska Glacier, or biking a few trails were nixed.
Instead the plans changed to a...
The Sleeping Lady Brewery
My partner and I landed late last night in Anchorage, AK. We weren’t looking forward to waking up early and hiking, nor doing anything else that might be strenuous. Both of us were jet lags and feeling quite lazy. So instead of hiking with my Mother and her friends, we opted for tooling around town and price out souvenirs for friends.
After paying $10 to park downtown, my nose caught...
Delayed in Detroit
It was noon and my partner and I had made our way though security in plenty of time for our flight. We both sat down to have a little bit of food before boarding. We start to sip our waters and browse though the menus, then all of a sudden a 800 number calls both of our phones. As we listen to the automated voice tell us that our flight had been canceled, I scream out a few choice words.
I run...
Celebrator Doppelbock - Ayinger Brewery
The heaviest of my work days are finally over and I accomplished most of my to do list with plenty of time to spare. What better way to celebrate a job well done, then with a nice cold Celebrator. Corny I know, but it seemed fitting.
I walk into my front door after purchasing a 4 pack from ValuMarket. The ice cold air conditioning hits me, and I can hear my room mate having a very in depth...
Coming Soon! Brews from the land of the Midnight...
July the 18th, 2010, Poor Kid will be flying into Anchorage, Alaska. For 2 weeks she will be enjoying the cool weather and even cooler local beer.
Beer sampling will include, The Alaskan Brewing Comany, Midnight Sun Brewing Company, The Mooses Tooth, and much more.
The anticipation is killer.
In local news, Poor Kid has indeed revived her tax return and will be upping the amount of beer...
City Scoot
So you’ve heard me mention it before, and you are probably wondering what exactly is City Scoot. Well let me tell you all about it.
So you’ve been out drinking at your favorite bar, and you realize, as you drop your keys for the fifth time or lit your cigarette backwards, that you probably shouldn’t drive home. Perhaps you shouldn’t even walk or just don’t want...
2010 Louisville Brewfest
Much like everyday, after I wake, I make my way to my favorite haunt known as Highland Coffee. There I sit, smoke a cigarette and sip on a medium black coffee as I read thought the LEO. I browsed thought the glossy articles in hopes of finding some interesting local events to attend. Lo and behold, my eyes spotted an advertisement for two of my favorite words, beer and free.
The 2010...
Top of the Hops Beer Festival
Saturday June 19th, was the Top of the Hops Beer Festival. Located at the Kentucky Convention Center, and with unlimited sampling of 275 different beers, it was bound to be a very interesting day.
There have been a plethora of “conventions” and “festivals” hosted at the very expensive downtown convention center, which have turned out to be total flops and not worth the...

Poor Kid Drinks Good Beer: Wittekerke
It’s hot out today. I mean really hot out. Not simply sun beating down on you heat, but typical southern heat. The humidity is intense, and no amount of shade will release you of swimming in a pool of your own sweat. Feels like summer is here.
So as I was looking into the freezer, attempting to finds something, anything to ease the pain of today’s over bearing heat. I found...
Poor Kid Drinks Good Beer: La Chouffe - Golden Ale
Today’s pick is the La Chouffe Golden Ale with spice. The official long title is “ArtisanBelgian Golden Ale Brewed with Spice”, but that is a little more then a mouthful. The color is a foggy golden color, with a decent white head that recedes quite swiftly.
The smell is strong with typical Belgian yeast, with citrus, and coriander aromas. Nothing is too strong to be anywhere close to...
Beer Advocate on How to Taste Beer
Look Take pause and marvel at its greatness before you partake of it. Raise the beer in front of you, but don’t hold your beer to direct light as this will dilute its true color. Describe its color, its head and its consistency.
Agitate Swirl your beer, gently in the glass. This will pull out aromas, slight nuances, loosen & stimulate carbonation and test head retention.
Smell 90-95% of what...
