1. Poor Kid Drinks Good Beer: La Chouffe - Golden Ale

Today’s pick is the La Chouffe Golden Ale with spice.  The official long title is “ArtisanBelgian Golden Ale Brewed with Spice”, but that is a little more then a mouthful. The color is a foggy golden color, with a decent white head that recedes quite swiftly.

The smell is strong with typical Belgian yeast, with citrus, and coriander aromas.  Nothing is too strong to be anywhere close to overwhelming.  However that also means that nothing is to particularly striking.

The first sip makes you notice all of the small complexities, which slowly become stronger as you pour.  Not too strong on the hops (English Golding & Saaz), but much stronger on the Yeast, which I see as pretty typical for Belgians.  Belgian yeast has a very distinct flavor that some categorize as banana or rotting fruit.  I personally find it a sweet fruit flavor and aroma that mellows as it ages, and creates a nice tart fruit palate that is appealing to many.

The mouth feel tends to be slightly fizzy, with a smooth light weight.  Not slimy or filmy, but the flavor coats that back of the mouth for a brief second. Overall this beer is easy to drink, %8.0 ABV, has flavor but is not all together flavorful.  With the addition of “brewed with spice”, misleads one to think it will be overly complex.

However, the La Chouffe Golden Ale, is quite simple, enjoyable, and overall very good.  Nothing stands out, but nothing is wrong.
