Today was not the best of days. Since I’ve landed the weather has been overcast and rainy. Not the sort of rain we are used to back home in Louisville. There’s been no crazy storms that knock over trees or power outages. No sir, rain in Anchorage means a miserable cold drizzle. Plans to visit Matanuska Glacier, or biking a few trails were nixed.
Instead the plans changed to a short adventure to the old reliable Wal-Mart to browse though souvenirs and stock up on groceries. Then, of course, what else is there to do on a rainy day, but to visit the local liquor store known as the Brown Jug.
There my partner and I, along with my little brother picked up a few beers we had never heard of before. Back home we opened up The Alaskan Brewing Company’s White Ale. After pouring the good beer you automatically see the light golden color and light head, but the more overwhelming aspect of the aroma. It was sweet, almost fruity.
The taste is a definite fruity yeast flavor. Very strong on the banana. Even stronger as the glass went on and the temperature changed. The beer is a little thick in the mouth and sadly has a strange after taste that coats the back of your tongue. Not bad but, not the most appealing feeling or flavor.
The Alaskan Brewing Company’s White Ale, isn’t a bad beer by any means, just not what I was looking for, I would highly recommend the IPA or the Amber, both staples of the brewery, over the White Ale. Still on a rainy day with nothing else to do, a good beer was what I needed, just wish it had been a little better.
