1. Hell or High Watermelon - 21st Amendment Brewery

I can’t help it.  Sometimes I am highly distracted by pretty packaging.  I blame it on the time spent in San Fransisco interning with a graphic design firm.  Speaking of San Fransisco, the city produces a lot of fashionable products but trendy doesn’t always equal good.  Still I found my hand reaching towards the shelf and purchasing a 6 pack of canned watermelon beer.

As it poured I noticed the foggy light golden color of a typical wheat.  Looked fine enough.  That was until I took a smell.

It was awful, and I don’t mean that lightly.  The aroma was like smelling a old wheat beer that had been sitting out in the heat for way too long.  It was a sour and slightly disturbing smell.

You know what happens next.  I tasted it.  I had to.  Curiosity struck me and I had to know if the beer tasted as bad as it smelled.

The taste was not nearly as bad as the smell.  It was a little tart for a wheat beer, but that was the watermelon speaking out.  The beer was brewed with watermelon, as well as having watermelon juice added during the canning process.  This process is not a bad one, and would be great for most any fruit wheat beers.  I’m just not sure about the use of watermelon.

The watermelon taste became much more present as the beer went on.  However so did the awful smell.  I wanted to drink more because of the unique taste, but I couldn’t bring myself to simply because of the smell.  I suppose this was just another reminder not to purchase beer simply because the packaging is pretty or the idea seems trendy, but this does not mean we should play it safe.  There is no problem in having a comfort zone, as long as you explore every now and then.
